Knowledge Mobilisation Fellowships offer health and care professionals an opportunity to develop their skills in using research evidence to support meaningful change in practice.
Fellows work alongside researchers and colleagues in health and care to explore a real-world problem or opportunity, identify and apply relevant evidence, and develop their knowledge and skills in knowledge mobilisation and implementation.
The fellowship is designed to support people to bridge the gap between research, evidence and practice, while developing their own skills, networks and experience.
What it means to be a Fellow
As a Knowledge Mobilisation Fellow, you will have the opportunity to develop your understanding of how evidence can be used to inform and improve health and care practice.
Fellows typically work on a problem or area of interest relevant to their organisation, service or community. This might involve identifying and interpreting relevant research evidence, working with colleagues and stakeholders, developing and testing approaches to change, or supporting the implementation of evidence-informed practice.
Fellowships are tailored to the needs and interests of the individual and the context in which they work. Alongside working on a specific area of focus, Fellows can access training, development, support and opportunities to connect with others working in knowledge mobilisation and implementation.
You do not need to be an experienced researcher to become a Fellow. The focus is on developing your skills and confidence in working with evidence and supporting change in real-world health and care settings.
Why do people become Knowledge Mobilisation Fellows?
People become Knowledge Mobilisation Fellows for a range of reasons. For some, it is an opportunity to address an important problem or challenge within their organisation, service or community. For others, it provides a chance to develop new skills, explore an area of interest or build connections between research and practice.
A Fellowship can provide an opportunity to:
- Develop knowledge and skills in knowledge mobilisation, implementation and using evidence in practice.
- Work on a real-world issue that matters to your service, organisation or community.
- Learn alongside researchers and other health and care professionals.
- Develop skills in identifying, interpreting and applying research evidence.
- Build networks with colleagues working across health, care and research.
- Explore how evidence can be adapted and implemented in different contexts.
- Contribute to meaningful change within your organisation or wider health and care system.
Knowledge mobilisation is fundamentally about people and relationships. Fellows can therefore also develop skills in listening, collaboration, communication and working with different communities and perspectives.
Who might consider becoming a Fellow?
Knowledge Mobilisation Fellowships may be particularly relevant to people who are interested in using evidence to improve services, practice or outcomes.
This could include:
- Health and care professionals
- Clinical and service managers/leads
- Allied health professionals
- Public health professionals
- Social care professionals
- People working in voluntary, community or third-sector organisations
- Others working in health and care who want to develop their skills in applying evidence to practice
You do not necessarily need previous research experience or specific research qualifications. What is important is an interest in evidence-informed change and a problem, question or area of practice that you would like to explore that aligns with the ARC South West aims/themes.
How can you get involved?
Knowledge Mobilisation Fellowship opportunities are advertised by ARC South West when funding and opportunities become available.
Each Fellowship opportunity will have its own eligibility criteria, application process and timeframe. Where relevant, opportunities will be advertised through the ARC South West website, newsletter and other communication channels.
