Biography

Karen holds a chair in Neonatal Medicine, with an applied research programme focused on improving child survival and reducing long-term neurodisability, through improvement in healthcare quality. Impactful research projects have converged on the final phase of the translational research pipeline, implementation of evidence-based interventions, to reduce mortality and brain injury/neurodisability.

Karen led the knowledge mobilisation and implementation of two evidence-based interventions/care bundles (PreCePT and PERIPrem), from local initiatives/innovations, all the way to national scale-up programmes, transforming outcomes for newborn babies and their families at national scale. She led the successful collaborative bid for England’s  National Child Mortality Database (NCMD) programme and has directed the NCMD since inception in 2018. NCMD outputs have informed national and international child health policy and have shone a light on the profound contribution of social deprivation and ethnic inequalities to infant mortality and disparities in outcomes after preterm birth. Karen works in close partnership with parents, charities and stakeholders to influence health and social care policy, to ensure high quality care for every baby and family in our care.
