Biography

My name is Penny Thompson, and I am a public involvement participant with the Applied Research Collaboration South West Peninsula (ARC South West Peninsula). I take part in a range of research projects, helping to ensure that the views and experiences of patients and members of the public are considered throughout the research process.

I regularly attend Ideas Cafés and meetings with the Public Experience Group, where I share my perspective and contribute to discussions about research. I also help with interviewing candidates for roles within ARC.

I take part because I want to help make sure that researchers focus not only on academic achievements, but also on the outcomes that matter to patients and members of the public. I believe that involving the public helps researchers understand the real-world impact of their work and keeps research relevant to the people who may ultimately benefit from it.

Being involved in research is important to me because the outcomes of research can have a significant impact on the future of healthcare. I value the opportunity to contribute my perspective and to play a part in shaping research that could make a meaningful difference to patients, the public and future healthcare.
